Posted in General Breakdown Travel on 30 October 2024
Europe is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. From luxury to budget friendly, there are a number of beautiful road-trips just waiting to be discovered and one suitable for every type of tourist.
With the cost of UK holidays too much for some this year following the global pandemic and the availability of these becoming scarce, an Autumn European getaway may be just the thing to relax or fuel your adventurous side before winter comes.
That's why Voyager Insurance list 3 popular routes for a European driving holiday suitable for the whole family, whichever you decide to choose.
(1) Tuscany, Italy - For the perfect countryside and tourist hot spots
Famously known as 'wine country', Tuscany has more to offer than just vineyards. Tuscany is one of the most beautiful regions in Italy and can be used as the starting and finishing point to your trip with plenty to see in between in Florence and neighbouring Pisa and Lucca.
Starting your trip in Florence, enjoy all the city has to offer. Florence is well known for its art culture and architecture so whilst there, why not head to the piazza del duomo - Florence’s main public square, with the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral (the Duomo) as its central landmark, and the close by Uffizi gallery to wander through the vast collection of Renaissance art.
Next head to Pisa, which is only approximately one hour and 30 minutes’ drive away where a visit to the infamous leaning tower of Pisa is a must. For those who enjoy some retail therapy, visit Borgo Stretto where the love or architecture and shopping meets. On this street you can find a range of designer stores, boutique shops and quaint cafes to soak up the sun and watch the day go by at a leisurely pace.
Next on the agenda is Lucca which is another mere thirty-minute drive away. Lucca is home to beautiful scenery and no place is better to head to for scenic beauty than Parco Alpi Apuane.
The Apuane Alpine Park is a vast area of natural beauty that contains the Apuan Alps mountain range. This region is well known for its exquisite marble, dramatic landscapes and hiking and climbing opportunities. Points of interest within this park include Mount. Forato, the ancient marble quarries, the Lipu Oasis and the Casola Museum.
Finally, head back to Florence through wide open roads and beautiful rolling hills, stopping at a vineyard on the way to enjoy the sunset whilst sipping on your favourite vino.
(2) Portugal - for an adventure off the beaten track
Portugal has a mix of thrilling, adventurous and scenic driving routes. So, rather than just picking one, we have listed our favourite 3 combined to create the ultimate European road tip to Portugal.
Beginning in Porto, drive through the Douro Valley, the home of Portugal’s most popular wine region. From the vineyards to the Douro River, there is plenty to see and do. Carrying on from Douro Valley, the next stop is Tras-os-montes.
Tras-os-montes is one of the wildest yet least tourist populated regions in Portugal where visitors can enjoy mountainside hikes and miles of rolling hills and unspoiled scenery. This area is also well known for its authentic cuisine too, perfect for foodies and those wanting an active holiday.
If you're more of a city slicker that wants something more to see and do after driving through the Portuguese countryside, then head to Madeira Island. This beautiful yet quaint island can be driven around in just one day, but where is the fun in that?
Ensure a few pit stops and take 2-3 days to enjoy this beautiful island that is rich in history, architecture and houses one of the most stunning harbours in the world. Not to mention the beautiful beaches and natural lava pools.
(3) Amalfi Coast, Italy - for luxury and jaw-dropping cliff-side views
Italy’s rugged 50 kilometre coastline stretch of medieval cliff-side fishing villages, lemon groves and instagram worthy views have made the Amalfi Coast one of the world’s most beloved road trips. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its magnificent landscapes, the drive is as challenging as it is rewarding.
Start in Salerno, through to Ravello, Amalfi, Positano, Minori & Maiori and the island of Capri, before finishing up in Sorrento. While enroute through all these destinations there are picturesque sea views, beautiful white beaches and an abundance of authentic and trendy restaurants and bars.
This road-trip is ideal for sun seekers and those that want a touch of glam and breath-taking views from an unforgettable getaway.
